Hello and welcome to EducationOnline100.com. This website in conjunction with the Education Online Book Series will introduce you to the 100 Most Affordable Online Degree programs in the country, as well as provide valuable information on affordable credit earning options for the undergraduate and graduate student. You will also find informative articles and insightful views from well known personalities and scholars regarding online education.
As the cost of higher education rises, alternatives to the traditional brick-and-mortar educational format continue to gain momentum. Improvements in technology, increased use of the Internet, and the need for flexibility in work and school schedules have led to a proliferation of online colleges/universities and other academic institutions offering affordable courses via the internet or through correspondence and in most cases are eligible to award associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees.
The online format allows individuals who would otherwise not be able to attend college such as those with physical disabilities, service members, stay at home parents, and others to have access to accredited higher education. According to a recent study conducted by the Babson Research Group and the College Board, “in 2011 nearly 6 million students participated in at least one online course, an increase of 560,000 students over the previous year” (http://www.babson.edu/News-Events/babson-Pages/111109OnLineLearningStudy.aspx) and that number continues to grow. More importantly, a study by Ithaka S+R, a nonprofit think tank focused on technology and education, found that “students who utilize interactive online learning - or hybrid learning - produce equivalent, or better results than students participating in face-to-face education” (http://www.usnews.com/education/onlineeducation/articles/2012/07/25/study-onlintte-learning-outcomes-similar-to-classroomresultsprint.html).
I impart this information not to suggest that online learning is any better than the traditional face-to-face format, but only to provide positive evidence debunking the notion that it’s any less. As a student familiar with both formats, I can honestly say that both have their pros and cons. However, there are online academic institutions such as Virtual Education Software Inc (VESI), The Learners Edge and other organizations that are making higher education far more affordable than their brick-and-mortar predecessors ever could. For example; Through VESI a graduate student can earn 3 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university for as little as $275.00 dollars total. The face of education is definitely changing.
Although I have no doubt that you will find the information on this website and in my books accurate, they should be utilized as guides only. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that a few schools have either changed their tuition rates or made changes to their degree requirements. So, please do your due diligence and research the school you hope to attend and its programs to gain a more accurate account. Military personnel are often offered special tuition rates, so please be sure to inquire.
The information regarding school programs and tuition rates were last confirmed during the month of November 2012. All schools listed on this website and in my books are regionally accredited by one of six regional accrediting agencies recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) http://www.chea.org/Directories/regional.asp. Regional accreditation is considered the premier standard of accreditation. It is the most recognized type of accreditation and the most widely accepted in terms of transferring credits and degrees.
Please take a look around, I'm positive you will find an affordable online degree program, courses, or information that will help you better understand the online format. I hope this website and the book series prove beneficial and helps in whatever educational endeavors you may partake. Good luck to you all.
